Pete Ashton's Notes & Links

This is my notebook. Stuff I’m doing, stuff I’m thinking about, stuff I’ve seen online and feel is worth sharing.

Notes from Saturday 22 November

A bucket is full of water with autumn leaves floating on the top. The bucket is within other buckets.
Lots of rain last night.

Recovery continues with another gentle day. Nearly there.

My shed has been leaking, not from the roof but through the corner wall which is most exposed to the driving wind and rain. It’s very annoying as I’ve been trying to sort it for the last year but haven’t had the capacity to do anything properly. A fix I put in place in October failed last night and while it’s not an urgent problem – the shed is ventilated so it dried out pretty quickly – it’s frustrating that I can’t just make it better.

The weather looks pretty good for the next few days and I don’t have anything in my diary til Wednesday. Maybe I’ll be able to burn a bit of battery and work on it without crashing too badly. Or maybe I should just leave it and focus on the self care.

(What’ll likely happen is I’ll burn myself out worrying about whether I should do it or not, and then feel shit for not doing anything. So let’s maybe avoid that, hey?)

Reading:

  • Whistle up - a key part of the resistance to immigration raids in the US has been whistles, distributed widely and used “as a call to action to neighbors to come out, and as a rapid warning for those that need to take cover.” This is a mutual aid guide to acquiring, making and distributing them.
  • Look for the helpers: Americans come together to protect immigrant neighbors - more on the whistle tactic and the actions it supports.
  • A hedgehog friendly festive season - gifts from animal charities tend to be, well, pretty shit to be honest. This selection from Hedgehog Street is definitely not shit. Some of them are quite delightful.
