Rather sleepy day. My quick afternoon nap turned into a long snooze-fest. Must have needed it.
Overnight listening:
- Dream Time: All Queens Day - Celebrating Alice Coltrane - Major confession that I’d assumed Alice Coltrane was John Coltrane’s daughter, not his wife, from which it’s clear I knew nothing about her life. This appalling error has now been corrected, as has my general ignorance about this amazing artist. Always discovering, always learning!
Reading:
- ‘My ideas are a little revolutionary’: ecologist Suzanne Simard on intelligent forests, the climate and her critics - The scientist who proposed that trees talk to each other via mycorrhizal fungi, popularising the term Wood Wide Web, which led to a bit of a backlash. Good to get some background and her side of the story.
- These aren’t AI firms, they’re defence contractors. We can’t let them hide behind their models - Most notable to me is this desire to obfuscate accountability is much older and embedded than recent usage of statistical target modelling to decide who to kill.
- The Testament of Ann Lee - review
- Sinners sinks its teeth into Irish settler colonialism
- Kantian Milk
Telly:
- Vladimir - Feels a little Netflix-by-numbers but I’ll give anything with Rachel Weisz a chance.
- University Challenge
