Notes and links from Tues 28 April

A branch of a tree lit rather dramatically from the side by the evening sun, shot from below against a blue sky.

Status:

Definitely a rest and digest day after last night’s relative excitements. No energy for a hustings write-up though, sadly. Plenty of pottering around the garden plus a surprise visit from Roo.

Fi’s artwork is in a group show launching on Friday and I’m wondering if I might be able to attend. In recent years this sort of this has been a total no-go but I know the venue and I know the quiet spots. It’s probably not going to happen (we can go when it’s quieter) but the fact that I’m contemplating it is notable.

Reading:

  • Meet the young Wikipedians writing the front page of music history — Getting flashbacks to 2004 when I made loads of pages for obscure underground cartoonists and zines which were rapidly deleted as not notable. Good on these kids for not backing down in their quest to create pages for all the music sub-sub-genres you’ve never heard of. “Then there’s Kelechi Wisdom, a 20-year-old from Manchester known as Aradicus, who’s significantly contributed to the Wikipedia presence of basically every 2020s uber-online microgenre (dariacore, hexD, digicore) as well as older sounds that didn’t have pages or much detail (landfill indie, recession pop, shitgaze). He’s spent 1,000 hours grinding Wikipedia since last July, essentially speedrunning the underground."
  • Do I belong in tech anymore? — I’m seeing two kinds of people using the autocomplete coding tools: amateurs and hobbyists doing fun, non-essential projects like home automation and website building, and hardened professional coders who are losing their fucking minds. This is one of the latter.

Watching:

  • (Gimme Some of That) Ol' Atonal Music - Merle Hazard feat. Alison Brown ‌(3:31)“Hard to sing if you rehearse, impossible by sight”
  • I Love Boosters trailer ‌(2:06) — New Boots Riley movie klaxon! This looks super good.
  • Bald Eagle live nest cam — When I tuned in one of the eagles flew in with a big stick and the other was like “what I am supposed to do with this?” and I was reminded of when I’d go skip-diving and bring some random piece of furniture back which Fiona would have to figure out where to put, or when Fiona sees some giveaway on the street chat which winds up in our corridor for a week.
