A piece of bindweed is creeping up a folded metal stand with two green leaves contrasted against the black metal.

Status:

Still pretty wiped out. Interestingly I’m getting out of breath doing the most mundane things, but I haven’t done any physically exhausting stuff for a long while. It’s all been cognitively demanding, which I guess shows how everything is connected. Mind-body duality my arse!

Reading:

  • Living in an alive world — Jenny Odell with a long and thoughtful essay on deep listening and looking with soft eyes. Via her fab newsletter which prompted me to finally start her book today. I came across Jenny in the mid 20-teens with her digital work mining Google Maps for typological collages and her transition from that is still inspiring.
  • The Rhyme-as-Reason effect — Why does the Satanic Panic have such longevity, long after its 80s heyday? Because it feels good to say. Something to bear in mind now the myth of “two-tier policing” is back on the far right agenda.
  • Vote for hedgehogs to feature on banknotes — You know it makes sense.
  • Britain was built for a different climate — A look at last week’s heatwave (he says, typing while in a jumper having brought the sunshade in due to high winds) through the lens of our buildings that were not built for this shit. Due to its position relative to the sun our brick terrace stays remarkably cool during hot weather, as long as the heatwave doesn’t last long enough for the bricks to heat up, then it’s an oven even when the weather turns cool again. I’m contemplating whitewashing the roof.
