Notes from 4 Oct

A shot of a lawn with a fence. There’s a round metal frame in the photo and a small wooden structure (the hedgehog cafe).

I didn’t really feel like blogging yesterday, so I didn’t. Not much caught my eye in the feeds and I didn’t do much of note (although I did briefly pop out on the scooter) so when it came to the end of the day and my text document was empty I figured, fuck it.

What I had been doing was building a new home for the 72 Pete blog which I want to move off Ghost before the next billing cycle. I like Ghost but I really can’t justify the cost so I’m switching to Hugo and hosting it on the cheap.

Hugo turns out to be exactly what I’m after. Simple to use with all the functionality I missed from Wordpress (back when Wordpress was good) and none of the bullshit I was getting from Eleventy. I’ve managed to import all the posts into a design that I don’t hate and could go live with it right now if I needed to. But there’s no rush.

I was thinking about what I might do with this blog and I’m seeing it as a repository for my writing. I’ve written a lot over the years and it’d be good to have it all in one place. To this end I’ve been going through my first blog on the Internet Archive (thankfully there was way less internet in the 2000s so they saved it all without me asking) and once I hit my stride around 2003-4 there’s some nice bits of writing there. Or maybe I just have enough distance not to feel too much cringe.

And then I’ll have a nice ongoing project of searching for things I’ve written on other websites and copying them into my archive. Should be a fun distraction for the winter.

For this week I’m thinking I’ll not pressure myself to post here. I’ve been thinking for a while of lowering the frequency so I can allocate the energy to something else so we might try 3-4 times a week? Will see. I’m sure I’ll get the itch to bombard y’all with links again soon.
